For my thesis I am studying the works of this French artist. I am concentrating on the compositional ideas and philosophies, her use of color, surface texture and allegory to create another work after this artist's style. In the new composition I am combining elements from several of her works, paying close attention to the contrasts of texture and temperature against the subtle backgrounds that this artist is known for. I am most interested in the artist's last painting that she created before her death, Still life with Lobster 1817.

Artist: Anne Vallayer - Coster was one of the most recognized still life painters of the French Rococo Era. She was born in 1744 and died in 1818. This woman made an extraordinary contribution to the art world. Mostly self taught, except for a period where she trained under the famous French marine artist Joseph Vernet. Vallayer was able to develop her own style with finesses. Her outstanding skills were recognized and she was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1770 at the young age of 26. The work of Vallayer-Coster stands out from that of other still life painters mostly because of the compositional style which appears more sophisticated. Still life painting was at the lower end of respected genres; however, Vallayer was able to elevate its standing through the use of style and color execution. This artist's talents and artistic range were broad. She painted over 120 floral still life paintings, floral watercolors and portraiture. Her talent got the attention of Queen Marie Antoinette and soon the artist became the painter for the French Court.
